Uncover the Hidden Costs of Relocating | RedKey Realty Leaders

When buyers think about the costs of relocating, the first thing that comes to mind is often the cost of financing a home. While financing is the largest piece, buyers often make the best decisions by stepping back and looking at the whole financial picture, including all those pesky "hidden costs."

Taking a Closer Look at the Costs of Relocation

St. Louis homes for sale are attracting buyers from all over the United States. It's certainly worth it to relocate if you find a home you can truly call "the one." That said, it often goes more smoothly when you can prepare for a bevy of incidental costs that accompany the moving process.

Let's look at some of the costs of relocating you should be ready for:

  • Building Move-In Fees
Some of the most sought-after homes in St. Louis are found in condominium complexes. Ultimately, living in a condo can save you a lot of money because so many maintenance issues will be taken care of. During your move, however, you may be responsible for initial building fees of around $300 to $500.

  • Professional House Cleaning
If you're moving into a single-family home, you won't need to be concerned about the above point. But a professional deep cleaning is a great way to get started in any new home. This removes any smoke, pet dander, or allergens, giving you a fresh start. The price ranges anywhere from $100 to $300 around St. Louis.

  • New Interior and Exterior Paint
Ideally, your new home has been freshly painted. Many sellers perform painting before hitting the market, but not all. And, of course, there's always the matter of your personal style. While you could do the work yourself, painting can be a big job. Depending on size, professional painters may charge anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000.

  • Cost of Utilities in St. Louis
The cost of utilities in St. Louis can vary based on the company you're using. All in all, St. Louis is very affordable in its utility costs when compared with similar cities. That said, many companies do ask for first-time setup fees. Some may be flexible, but you should still budget a few hundred dollars.

  • Vehicle Registration and Insurance
If your current insurer is active here in Missouri, you can call ahead so your coverage switches over to your new state on the right day. When you move across state lines, you generally only have a matter of weeks to take care of vehicle registration. As of this writing, you have 30 days to title your vehicle after becoming a resident.

  • Groceries and Takeout
When you first step through the door of your new home, you might be exhausted from the whole process of closing and moving. Getting your new space ready can be tiring, so don't be surprised if takeout is the order of the day, at least at first. Once you have the lay of the land, you'll need to fill your fridge and cabinets!
